FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the most common questions from applicants and contributors, grouped by stage. If yours isn’t here, email jackson@halluminate.ai.

01

Before applying

Can we set up a call to discuss the role?

Happy to chat — but the fastest path is to apply first (about 30 seconds) and complete the screener, which explains the company and the work in detail. Most questions are answered there, and we can connect afterward to cover anything that remains.

Can I start later in the summer, or in the fall?

Yes. We hire on a rolling basis, so you can apply now and set a future start date that works around your internship or other commitments. If you can commit to 20+ hours per week for at least 6 consecutive weeks once you begin, you are eligible.

I applied. What happens next, and when will I hear back?

Here’s the full sequence after you apply:

  • Screener link arrives by email within 1–2 business days.
  • Onboarding emails (Slack, Horizon, Rippling, background check) follow within 24–48 hours of passing the screener.
  • Team Lead intro + training access once your checks clear.

Not hearing back? Check your spam folder first, then email jackson@halluminate.ai and we’ll look up your status.

What is the minimum hours commitment?

We require a minimum of 20 hours per week for at least 6 consecutive weeks. Hours can go up to 60 per week depending on your availability. There are no fixed daily hours — the schedule is fully flexible, including weekends.

What is Halluminate and what does the work involve?

Halluminate trains AI models using domain experts with IB, PE, and consulting backgrounds. The work involves creating complex financial deliverables like Excel models, PowerPoint presentations, and financial analyses, then evaluating AI-generated outputs against those benchmarks.

The core requirement is finance domain expertise, not engineering or coding. All work is fully remote and asynchronous.

Do I qualify without IB, PE, or consulting experience?

Most projects require IB, PE, or consulting backgrounds because the work demands real finance domain expertise. We do have roles that fit adjacent backgrounds such as FP&A, capital markets, asset management, investment management, or corporate strategy.

If you are unsure whether you qualify — or which role group to select on the application — please apply and we will reach out.

What is the pay rate?

Pay is based on your background:

  • Consulting: $100/hour
  • IB / PE: $150/hour

Rates increase quickly based on performance — contributors can reach $225–$250/hour. Some contributors have earned over $200K while still in school. During training, compensation is milestone-based: you earn $3,000 upon successful completion.

Can I work fewer than 20 hours per week?

Not at the moment. 20 hours per week is the minimum needed to get up to speed and add value, so we’re unable to accommodate lower commitments (e.g., 5–10 hours per week). If your availability opens up later — for example after an internship — apply now and set a future start date.

What does the day-to-day look like?

The day-to-day is mostly building problems and rubrics — sets of instructions and benchmark deliverables for the AI to learn from — and then reviewing your work with the team. A typical week mixes:

  • Creating problems: drafting realistic IB/PE/consulting tasks with ground-truth deliverables (models, decks, analyses).
  • Evaluating outputs: assessing AI-generated work against your benchmarks and rubrics.
  • Review cycles: async feedback with your Team Lead through Slack and the Horizon platform.

Everything is asynchronous and self-scheduled, so you choose when those hours happen.

Is the opportunity still available?

Yes, we are actively hiring. Apply through the link on halluminate.ai/experts — it takes about 30 seconds.

How long does the engagement last? What happens when my project ends?

This is an ongoing engagement, not a fixed-length project. We have generally been able to roll everyone who stays with the team for the project’s duration onto new work, as long as they are in good standing — put in the hours and deliver results, and you’re all set to continue.

Do you have a referral program?

Yes — you can refer friends with relevant backgrounds using your referral link once you’re on the platform, and you can list a referrer when you apply. If you’ve referred someone and want to check on their application, you can check on the platform.

Visas & work authorization

Is this work permissible under OPT or CPT?

This is a 1099 independent contractor role. We have many contributors who work under CPT or OPT, but eligibility depends entirely on your school and individual visa terms — confirm with your school’s international office or visa advisor before starting. We can guarantee 20+ hours per week, but the schedule is ad hoc given the contractor structure.

If your OPT/EAD hasn’t started yet, we’ll set your start date for when your authorization begins — just tell us the date. Do not work until your visa allows you to.

My school needs a detailed offer letter for CPT. Can you provide one?

Yes. Once you complete the application and screening stage, the offer letter automatically populates with the standard details. If your school requires additional specifics — job title, start/end dates, hours, location, supervisor, or company letterhead — we can issue a CPT addendum to the offer letter.

Email kunjika@halluminate.ai with exactly what your international office requires and we’ll prepare it for signature.

Can you offer W-2 employment or visa sponsorship?

No. We operate on a 1099 basis only and cannot offer a W-2 structure at this time. We also cannot support H-1B transfers or visa sponsorship. If your school requires a W-2 arrangement for CPT, this unfortunately may not be a fit right now — we’ll let you know if the structure changes.

Can I work from outside the US?

No — we are currently focused on US-based candidates only, and a US bank account is required for payroll compliance.

If you’re traveling abroad temporarily, flag it to your Team Lead; note that work is not permitted from certain countries. If you’ll be abroad for an extended period, we can set your start date for when you return.

02

Onboarding

Paperwork

How are rate increases and promotions decided?

Everyone starts at the base rate for their category. Rates increase quickly based on performance — most strong contributors see an increase within their first month.

Promotions are based on specific output metrics: the number of problems delivered (roughly 6 problems within a set timeframe for consultants), total hours committed, responsiveness, and quality of communication. The $200–250/hour rates are for senior writers who have delivered consistently over time.

I have a potential conflict with my current employer.

If you need to complete a formal disclosure with your employer before signing, that’s fine — let us know and we’ll hold your onboarding until your conflict clears. Working on other AI training platforms is generally not an issue, but flag anything you think could conflict and we’ll confirm.

Screener, accounts & access

I can’t log in to Horizon, or my account says “deactivated.”

Onboarding and Horizon links expire after a period of inactivity, and accounts can show as deactivated after extended time away or if duplicate accounts were created. This is usually a quick fix on our end.

Email jackson@halluminate.ai (a screenshot of the error helps) and we’ll reactivate your account or send a fresh invite, typically within 24 hours.

How do I get access to Slack (or restore deactivated access)?

Your Slack link lives on Horizon: go to Profile in the top right and you’ll see a checklist that includes links to the Slack workspaces. Make sure you join with the same email used on your Horizon account.

If your Slack account was deactivated or the invite expired, email jackson@halluminate.ai and we’ll restore access.

I applied with the wrong email, created duplicate accounts, or my name is wrong.

Email kunjika@halluminate.ai with the address you want on file and we’ll consolidate duplicate accounts, update the email, or correct your name in the system.

If you applied twice, we’ll close one application — a closure notice on the duplicate does not affect your active account. If you need to withdraw entirely, let us know and we’ll remove your profile from Rippling and the platform.

I haven’t received my screener yet.

Screener links are typically sent within 1–2 business days of applying.

  • Check your spam or junk folder first — that’s where they usually are.
  • Confirm you’re checking the email address you applied with.
  • Still nothing? Email jackson@halluminate.ai and we’ll resend it right away.
What is the screener, how long does it take, and should I prepare?

The screener is a short video and quiz that explains Halluminate and the work in detail. It takes under 30 minutes, requires no preparation, and is required before onboarding to make sure everyone understands the role. It is separate from training.

Checks, payment & logistics

Can I push or change my start date?

Yes. Reach out to your Team Lead or email jackson@halluminate.ai with your updated availability — for example, to align with your OPT/CPT authorization date or after an internship — and we’ll adjust your start date in the system. You can also apply now and set a future start date if you’re not ready yet.

Why is my background check or ID verification delayed?

Background checks are processed through Checkr, a third-party provider, and typically take a few business days (international checks can take longer). Everyone must complete their background check before starting problems — you can work through onboarding paperwork in the meantime, but Slack intros and running problems wait until it clears.

Cleared on Checkr but not on Horizon? Or waiting more than 5 business days? Reach out to jackson@halluminate.ai.

What’s left on my onboarding checklist?

Your Horizon profile (top right) shows a checklist of all remaining onboarding steps: screener, employment paperwork in Rippling, background check, ID verification, and Slack.

The Rippling offer letter must be signed before training access is unlocked. Once everything shows complete, you can begin training directly on Horizon.

Who is my Team Lead, and when will I hear from them?

You’ll be introduced to your Team Lead after completing onboarding — background check, ID verification, and platform setup. Your Team Lead monitors your start date, deadlines, and output quality, and is your primary contact for extensions and project questions.

If you haven’t been assigned one, your lead has left, or they’re unresponsive, email jackson@halluminate.ai and we’ll connect you with the right person.

I can’t attend the onboarding call. Is there a recording?

Yes. Onboarding calls are recorded and the recording link is shared by email and in the Slack channels — watching the recording is fine if you can’t attend live, and new sessions run regularly for later cohorts. The call is a kickoff; you can begin the onboarding checklist on Horizon beforehand.

How do I set up direct deposit in Rippling?

Sign in to Rippling and go to Payroll → My Pay → Bank Accounts, where you’ll find the option to add direct deposit. A US bank account is required for payroll compliance.

Saw a $0.01 deposit from a name you don’t recognize? Small test deposits from third parties are part of Rippling’s bank connection process — they’re legitimate.

I’m waiting on my SSN. Can I still start?

Possibly. If you’re able to complete an international background check without an SSN, you can proceed with onboarding in the meantime. Otherwise we’ll hold your start date until your SSN arrives — just keep us posted on timing and we’ll adjust deadlines accordingly.

03

Training

I need more time — can I get an extension?

Potentially. Things come up — illness, finals, travel, emergencies. Be proactive and communicative if you think you will need an extension. Email jackson@halluminate.ai.

How does training pay work? Did the payout structure change?

Training pays a $3,000 milestone upon successful completion — finishing the required modules plus delivering two successful problems — rather than hourly or per-problem amounts. Training time is not logged as work hours.

How is training structured?

Training is self-paced, fully remote, and takes roughly two weeks (typically 15–20 hours of work). There are five levels that walk you through the task types you’ll be evaluating and the platform used to do the work, ending with creating your own problems. You can start your second problem while the first is under review.

Once approved as a Core Contributor, you move to hourly pay.

Still stuck?

Email jackson@halluminate.ai with a quick description and a screenshot if it’s a platform issue. Most access and account problems are resolved within 24 hours.
